The Syngenta Foundation will sponsor research of direct relevance to its wider goal of improving the livelihoods of the resource poor.


SFSA supports research and breeding programmes in locally important crops such as millet, sorghum and tef. The goal is to develop higher yielding varieties with enhanced resistance to pests and diseases. Below are some of our grants that were awarded to carryout research on these important crops.

  1. Syngenta Foundation Grant for Resource Center on Marker Assisted Breeding
  2. Enhancing the careers of East African Women Scientists
  3. CGIAR'S Generation Challenge Programme
  4. Grant to Zerihun Tadele, Ph.D. Institute of Plant Sciences, University of Bern for genetic improvement of the Ethiopian cereal tef on lodging resistance.
  5. The Molecular Basis of Resistance in Rice (Oryza Sativa) to the Parasite - striga Hermonthica.
  6. Grant to ICRISAT for start-up phase of Harnessing Modern Science in Africa to Sustain Sorghum and Pearl Millet Production for Resource-poor Farmers.
  7. Syngenta Foundation grant to ICRISAT for SSR markers for improving pearl millet breeding efficiency in African and Asia.
  8. New Foundation grant to IFPRI for Research on Public Private Partnerships.
  9. Syngenta Foundation grant to Cornell University.
  10. Workshop on Plant genetic resources and Food Security in West and Central Africa.
  11. Breaking the Yield Barrier: Heterosis in West African Pearl Millet.
  12. Public-Private Partnerships in Agricultural Research: Analysis of Challenges facing Industry and the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research
