Improving the livelihood of smallholder farmers
Productivity and Markets
![]() “Productivity” and “markets” are terms that, in a nutshell, characterize the operational strategy that the Syngenta Foundation pursues. Improving the livelihood of smallholders as farmers implies raising the productivity of their operations in relevant dimensions (land, labor, water and so on) and improving the terms and fluidity of their integration into agricultural markets. Seed and other inputs (including financial markets) are important, as are markets and trading arrangements on the output side.
In the area of productivity enhancement, the Foundation is engaged in product development and introduction. The focus, thus, ranges from the lab and greenhouse all the way to farmers' fields, with a view to seeing improved seeds and agronomic practices adopted for sustainable and lasting performance gains.
In terms of markets, the Foundation focuses on strengthening functional value chains in domestic and foreign markets that productively and gainfully associate smallholders, and building public-private partnerships in agribusiness sectors that involve smallholders, producer organisations, contract farming, and the possibility to create stable rural nonfarm jobs.
